Lady Gaga, Eosine, Finneas, Cabane,… We have classified (objectively) the best albums to listen to this first week of October and there is a big rubbish

We know: any classification can be discussed! But here is the one from the editorial staff of Le Moustique, from the worst album of the week to the best…

Lady Gaga doesn’t get tired

Sound companion to the film Joker: Folie à deux, in which she plays the role of Harley Quinn, more than a new album, “Harlequin” includes covers of jazz standards with big band. Lady Gaga had already shown her relevance in this exercise on her two records recorded with crooner Tony Bennett. Vocally, “Harlequin” holds up, but the choice of covers is very consensual. Do we really need yet another version ofOh When The Saints or from That’s Entertainment? The unpublished Happy Mistake et Madness two are more successful. A marketing disk. – L.L.

2) Testimony: timeless pop

After working on his sister Billie Eilish’s three albums, touring with her around the world and releasing his first solo effort (2021’s aptly named “Optimism”), Finneas steps out of his comfort zone with “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” The young man leaves his room and approaches “Do it yourself to adapt to the environment of a studio and session musicians. The result is a record of timeless pop where sunny choruses, arpeggio chords, careful arrangements and good feelings dominate. No sound experimentation here, no feverish burning and confessions that challenge like his sister… We hear a lot of instruments. Like Cleats et Lotus Eater), it’s pretty but sometimes too nice. -L.L.

3) Cabin with finesse

Only nine months after his second album “Brûlée”, Cabane, the solo project of Brussels musician and photographer Thomas Van Cottom (ex-Venus), publishes a new melodic sketch. That is to say nine titles nuanced between a French song which we will place in the margin, an airy pop pearl in English (Let It Gonot far from the soundscapes of “Kid A” by Radiohead) and instrumentals which go beyond the function of interludes. A short, demanding record, certainly, but one that takes us by the hand from start to finish. At the end of the journey, we appreciate the fluidity of the compositions, both in the richness of the arrangements (guitar, piano, strings, glockenspiel) and in the lively singing of its French performer and lyricist Lonny. Available in 10 inch vinyl and on platforms. As already written at the time of “Brûlée”, Cabane deserves to broaden its audience beyond the initiated. – L.L.

4) Eosine, the future of Belgian rock

Line-up changes, revised and improved stage configuration, new contract (with the Ghent label Mayway Records, discoverer of Meltheads, Ão and The Haunted Youth), new sounds… A lot has happened for the Liège band Eosine since its deserved raid on most of the prizes awarded during the 2022 edition of the Concours Circuit. Singer, guitarist and composer Elena Lacroix is more than ever at the helm of the project. She put her medical studies on hold to pursue her musical dreams. While waiting for an album announced for 2025, the writing of which she is refining, she shows the path now followed by Eosine with the EP “Liminal”.

We find there Digitalinea song that already appeared on “Coralline” (2023) but, this time, in a more shoegaze version, more raw and closer to the electric urgency displayed in the group’s live shows. UV is the other pearl of the EP. Airy voice, dreampop chorus, latent tension in the guitars and flamboyant rhythm section should allow Eosine to confirm the emerging buzz on Flemish radios. Still in this same vein “dreamy”, Progeria et Plant Healing illustrate, for their part, the instrumental mastery and the ambition of Elena Lacroix to impose her relevance in our alternative rock scene. Eosine asked the right questions and made the right choices. Can’t wait for the album.

24/10, Botanique, Brussels. 12/12, Reflektor, Liège.

Eosine, Liminal, ROCK, Mayway Records. ★★★✩
