India’s media watchdog has demanded a thorough investigation after the body of a journalist was found buried in a concrete-lined septic tank.

The journalist’s body was found on January 3 in the state of Chhattisgarh, by tracing his mobile phone after a report of his disappearance made by his family (archives).

Independent journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, 28, had produced numerous reports on corruption and the Maoist insurgency that has raged for half a century in the state of Chhattisgarh, in central India.

He also ran a popular YouTube channel called ‘Bastar Junction’. The Press Council of India, “concerned” by the alleged murder of Mr. Chandrakar, requested in a statement on Saturday evening a detailed report on the case.

Three people were arrested in connection with this case.

More than 10,000 people have died during the insurgency led by Maoist “Naxalite” rebels, who claim to be fighting for the rights of marginalized indigenous populations in the central regions of India, rich in natural resources.

Vishnu Deo Sai, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh and a member of India’s ruling party, called Mr Chandrakar’s death “tragic” and promised the “severest punishment” for those responsible.

Last year, India ranked 159th out of 180 in the world press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders.
