In October 2022, during the premiere Transmission dedicated to the great return of the saga Silent Hill, Konami had formalized and unveiled the first artworks of Return to Silent Hilla new horror film directed by Christophe Gans. The French filmmaker had already directed the first part, which was rather successful, but it was MJ Bassett who took care of the sequel, to be forgotten.
Return to Silent Hill will be based on Silent Hill 2which recently received a remake, and will feature Jeremy Irvine in the role of James Sunderland and Hannah Emily Anderson in that of Mary. Pyramid Head will obviously be there, his presence this time will be logical, Konami had even published a trailer on social networks… before deleting it. It must be said that Return to Silent Hill is behind schedule, but Christophe Gans spoke about his film during an interview with Firstwho even shares a teaser:
The French director declares:
Silent Hill 2 is perhaps the most distressing experience ever offered by a video game.
The time gap between the two films was necessary. Return to Silent Hill is not a sequel. It’s a new film, with rules, like Silent Hill 2 betrayed Silent Hill. The second game established that this universe did not exist except in the character’s head. We move from a parallel universe to the subjective vision of the hero. The male gaze is the deep essence of Silent Hill 2… Either I stupidly remade the first film, or I took advantage of this time to have a different experience. I too have changed. I am no longer the same. The first film, I saw it as a horror opera, very large, with large sets, crane movements… There, there are a lot of drones, handheld cameras, even for shots that could have been do with rails. The result is very, very different.
A different recipe for a different video game, that’s something to intrigue players. If the casting divides fans for the moment, it must be recognized that the aesthetics of Return to Silent Hill is in line with that of the 2006 film, it’s reassuring. If Christophe Gans wanted to return to this foggy city, it is notably because his project of adaptation of Corto Maltese fell through after the death of producer Samuel Hadida, who had also worked on the first film Silent Hill. A very popular feature film internationally, the filmmaker states:
I see Silent Hill influences everywhere: the nurses’ scene was sometimes reshot shot by shot! In The Nun, I Am Legend, or Army of the Dead… But it’s rather flattering, isn’t it?
Return to Silent Hill will it be as significant? Response in the coming months, the film is expected in cinemas in 2025, at a date still unknown. You can buy Silent Hill 2 Remake from €49 on Amazon, Cdiscount, Fnac et Gamesplanet.
