The return of the most daring feline in the 7th Art
Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest is an animated film released in 2022, produced by DreamWorks Animation and directed by Joel Crawford (The Five Legends, Kung Fu Panda) and Januel Mercado, who made his directorial debut here. This feature film is the sequel to the first opus centered on the character of Puss in Boots, a spin-off from the famous Shrek franchise. If the success of the feature film is undeniable 2 years later with 485.3 million dollars collected at the box office, it could never have seen the release. Indeed, the development of this sequel was complicated to say the least since the initial announcement in 2012, with changes in directors and screenwriters, before finding its current direction.
The film stars Antonio Banderas in his iconic role of Puss in Boots, and Salma Hayek in that of Kitty Velvet Paws. They are notably joined by Harvey Guillen et Wagner Moura who respectively lend their voices to Perrito and Death. The film’s visuals are distinguished by an innovative animation style, combining modern techniques with an aesthetic reminiscent of illustrated fairy tales for a result offering an atypical experience to spectators. Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest is available for free on TF1+.
In this new adventure, Puss in Boots realizes that his thirst for adventure has led him to exhaust eight of his nine lives. Faced with his mortality, he embarks on an epic journey in search of the Wishing Star, a legendary star capable of granting a wish, in hopes of restoring his lost lives. Accompanied by Kitty Velvet Paws and Perrito, he faces various obstacles and enemies while rediscovering the values of friendship and courage.
“A hilarious and entertaining sequel”
The film was widely praised by the press, giving it a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews highlight its successful balance of action, humor and emotional depth. The Times (UK) notes that the film is “neither too scary nor too bland” and features “slow-motion, angular and stylish fight sequences”. For the Independent (UK), the film offers “something different and unexpected” proving that “Puss in Boots has grown with its audience”.
The Observer preferred to focus on the visual style, stating that the film “exploits the familiar appeal of the self-indulgent feline, while adopting an original graphic visual style”. Empire Magazine adds that “a cat always lands on its feet” and that “Puss in Boots 2 does so with considerable talent, lively wit and surprising depth”. Finally, the San Jose Mercury News describes the film as “the hilarious and entertaining sequel to the 2011 film.” According to our colleague, “Puss in Boots 2 is a real treat”. This praise reflects a positive consensus, positioning Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest as a success both narratively and visually.
