As such, a recent post on Reddit seems to demonstrate a lack of understanding among certain fans regarding a specific scene from the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Indeed, one fan questioned why “the Palantir does not react when Pippin touches it in Isengard“. Indeed, at the beginning of the third film, the Hobbit discovers in the water the Stone of Seeing that the magician Saruman used to communicate with Sauron, catches it with his bare hands and gives it to Gandalf. Later, in Edoras, Pippin will touch the Palantir again and communicate with the Dark Lord of Mordor. Given the number of likes under the Reddit post, it seems that this question is bothering many fans.
The answer to this question is quite simple, and reading the Unfinished tales and legends reveals it to us. “The Clairvoyants [autre nom des Palantirí] did not have the capacity to uncover the mind of the individual, unexpectedly or against their will; because the transmission of thought depended on the will of the users on both sides.” We therefore understand that communicating with a Palantir requires compliance with two essential conditions.
First, two people need to use the Palantir at the same time; then that both people want to communicate.
