2024… A very lively supervillain year? The aftershocks of the writers/actors strike were felt, with only one Marvel Studios release. Behind the triumph of Deadpool & WolverineSony Pictures rushed into the breach to liquidate its Spider-Man Universe without Spider-Man, aligning flops and semi-successes (Madame Web, Venom : The Last Dance, Kraven the Hunter). On the side of DC Comics, it is the monumental failure of Joker: Folie à deux who will be remembered for a long time. When it came time to take stock, traditional superheroes were conspicuous by their absence, replaced by anti-heroes and supervillains. A trend that we also observe on the small screen, with the success ofAgatha All Along, The Boys et The Penguin. And as nature abhors a vacuum, the weakness of live action was compensated for by geek animation, X-Men ’97 has Creature Commandospassing through Transformers: The Beginning et The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. In short, it wasn’t necessarily a great year in terms of quality, but there were still some gems, whether it was the moving end of Superman & Lois or the rise in power of Rings of Power.
So, what does 2025 have in store for us? A return to the early 2010s, with only four Marvel/DC Comics blockbusters… but almost nothing but heavy for this year which promises to be so decisive! In addition to finding its cruising speed, it will be test time for Marvel Studios, with Captain America : Brave New World, Thunderbolts* et The Fantastic Four : First Steps. Without the crutch of nostalgia and cameos, will the ‘new’ heroes of the Multiverse Saga find a place in the hearts of the public? And of course, we will witness the real launch of the DCU with Superman. For writer-director-producer-president James Gunn, it’s make or break! After the clearance of the DCEU (2023) and the SSU (2024), it will also be Marvel Television’s turn to empty its shelves, with six series scheduled, including the highly anticipated Daredevil : Born Again. And that’s without counting Andor, Gen V, Peacemaker, The Sandmanetc. There really will be something for everyone and that’s so much the better!
