Last October, Tom Holland shared crucial information on the future of his Spider-Man in theaters. On the set of Jimmy Fallon, the British actor suggested that the filming of Spider-Man 4 would begin next summer. The project still remained very mysterious, only the name of Daniel Destin Cretton was mentioned to take over from Jon Watts as director. We could nevertheless hope that the imminent filming would be an indicator of a 2026 cinema release.
According to recent information relayed by BGR — who says he spoke with reliable sources close to the file — things are more complicated than expected. Marvel and Sony Pictures would not know what to do with the character stuck between two cinematographic universes and temporalities. The proposed scenario would in fact be so bad that the two entities would consider starting from scratch. If Tom Holland obviously liked the direction taken by the narration, this would not be the case for Kevin Feige. The insider confides that the writers are “rewriting and changing everything. The scenario is not yet ready and will not be for some time”. According to certain rumors, which have yet to be confirmed, Sony Pictures is still targeting Christmas 2026 to invest in cinemas. The film would thus avoid competition with Christopher Nolan’s next film: Odyssey.
What’s the deal with Spider-Man?
Spider-Man enjoys a special status within Kevin Feige’s titanic MCU. He is in fact the only character that the Maison des Idées has decided to share with another studio, the only one to benefit from the expertise of Disney as much as that of Sony Pictures. There are still some conditions to this collaboration, some even almost interrupted the character’s journey to the cinema between Spider-Man 1 and Spider-Man 2, then before No Way Home. Marvel is not really the type to walk hand in hand with its competitors, even if the modest (if not non-existent) success of the universe dedicated to antiheroes such as Venom and Morbius undoubtedly facilitates the process.
To tell the truth, Marvel ensured that Peter Parker never crossed paths with the heroes developed by Sony Pictures, much to the chagrin of the latter who had to deal with films evolving around a ghostly figure exploited alongside the Avengers. If the scheduled end of the license redistributes the cards, Spider-Man must still navigate two waters. And in more ways than one. Still according to rumors, the two companies are unable to agree on the type of adventure reserved for the character.
“Take me home”
Marvel would like a return to basics. After a first adventure on a human scale, the character was quickly confronted with challenges that were beyond him. The apotheosis will have been No Way Homewhich summoned the multiverse and other interpreters of the web weaver. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire put on the costume again in 2021 to help Tom Holland in his fight against the consequences of the spell cast by Doctor Strange. While Marvel wants antagonistes “street level”Sony Pictures would like to play the card of overbidding and to bring back his acolytes to face an otherwise gigantic threat.
It must be said that Marvel has learned from its mistakes, the license having been immobilized by the grandiloquence ofEndgame. After the finale of the Infinite saga, the company struggles to regain the enthusiasm of the first days and to gather as many followers as in the past. Reconnecting with the character’s roots in the comics isn’t necessarily a bad idea. To want to do more is to take the risk of disappointing, of no longer surprising, whereas an emphasis placed on the fight against evil on a daily basis would undoubtedly be comforting. After all, Spider-Man is a teenager who uses his quirk to make New York safer. It would also be an opportunity for the saga of truly take over the city that never sleepsthe first film evolving mainly in a Residential areawhile the second consisted of traveling across Europe in the footsteps of Quentin Beck.
In any case, we will have to wait a little longer to find out what the future holds for the character. The information relayed by BGR have not been confirmed or denied by Marvel and Sony Pictures. The two entities will not say more for the moment, working to bring back the vigilante who is among the most famous in their respective catalogs. Note that the big project for Marvel is not so much on the side of Spider-Man, Kevin Feige is focusing his efforts on the return of the Avengers and Robert Downey Jr in the shoes of Doom.
