A mixed reception for “Red One”

Imagine Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans reunited in a big-budget Christmas action movie, attempting to do for the holidays what the Marvel Cinematic Universe did for superheroes. A guaranteed success, right? However, since its release last week, “Red One” has struggled to convince.

With a disappointing 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes and box office receipts lower than its colossal budget, the film struggled to find its audience. Although it attempts to bring a new angle to the traditional Christmas movie genre, “Red One” instead seems “loud, empty and hideous”, as I mentioned in my review.

More convincing alternatives

Still, while “Red One” fails in its attempt to create a new Christmas classic, other films succeed in adding suspense, action and inventive twists to the traditional holiday formula. Here are five more satisfying alternatives:
