“The Count of Monte Cristo” by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière

The young Edmond Dantès sees his life shattered by a plot that results in him being locked up for 14 years in one of the dungeons of the Château d’If.

Edmond manages to escape thanks to the help of Abbot Faria, who reveals to him the secret of a hidden treasure. Endowed with this fortune, Edmond Dantès returns to the scene of his past under the name of Count of Monte Cristo in order to accomplish his revenge.

In just one year, this is the third time that the work of Alexandre Dumas has been brought to the screen – There were the two parts of The 3 Musketeers before. Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière wrote the screenplay for the three films and for Monte-Cristo, they also directed the film.

Pierre Niney is Edmond Dantès. Patrick Mille, Laurent Lafitte and Bastien Bouillon are the bad guys. Also featured are two amazing actresses: Anaïs Demoustier and Anamaria Vartolomei.

“Kinds of Kindness” de Yorgos Lanthimos

The film places the theme of submission at the heart of the three stories that make up its film.

Just a few months after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with “Poor Creatures”, Lanthimos was also among the winners of the Cannes Film Festival, as the Best Actor award went to one of the actors from “Kinds of Kindness”, namely the American Jesse Plemons.

Also on the bill are Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. Everyone plays not one but three characters since the film is made up of three different stories. For example, Jesse Plemons is successively a submissive employee, a cop suspicious of his wife and the guru of a cult.

“Out of Time” by Olivier Assayas

On screen, it is Vincent Macaigne who is Assayas’ double – to the point that he adopts his voice, his slightly precious tone.

The film tells the story of the cohabitation, in the countryside, of two brothers during confinement. The filmmaker’s brother is a rock critic, producer on France Inter, he is played by Micha and not Michka Lescot.

As the setting is that of the real childhood home of these two men, the past resurfaces, in the form of objects or memories which handle cultural references which are often chic and pointed.

In this house, there are four of them in total. The companions of these two brothers are played by Nine d’Urso and Nora Hamzawi.

“The Bikeriders” by American Jeff Nichols

Welcome to the Midwest, a time when it was cool to smoke in bars with your thumb and forefinger in your hand. That’s the late ’60s, with “The Bikeriders” by American Jeff Nichols.

We follow the story of the Vandals, the name of a motorcycle club founded by a truck driver named Jimmy.

The Vandals combine their passion for motorcycles with their rejection of the rules of American society before falling into violence in the early 1970s.

The story takes the form of an interview with Kathy, a young woman who has fallen in love with one of the Vandals. His name is Benny, he fascinates her, as much as he loves Jimmy, the leader of the gang.

The film therefore draws on the mythology of the road and gangs, already widely explored by American cinema from “The Wild One” to “Easy Rider”, among others.

And this is yet another film inspired by a book, this time by photographs. A cult book by Danny Lyon, whose images are discovered at the very end of the film. Benny is played by Austin Butler, Jimmy by Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer plays Kathy.

“Maria” by Jessica Palud

In 1972, Maria Schneider was 19 years old. She shares the poster for “Last Tango in Paris” with Marlon Brando – who is 48 – under the direction of Bernardo Bertolucci. The actress’s life changes with this film and a scene in particular, of which Maria Schneider is not warned, but for which Brando and Bertolucci have agreed: the simulation of sodomy with a lump of butter for lubricant .

A scene known even to those who have not seen it. Jessica Palud decides to place the reconstruction of the filming of this scene at the heart of her film. It shows the before and after, the impact of this violence in the name of art, in a career and in a life.

The film is adapted from the book by Vanessa Schneider, journalist, author and cousin of Maria Schneider.

The role of Maria is played by Anamaria Vartolomei, who leads an exciting journey notably with “The Empire” by Bruno Dumont or “The Event” by Audrey Diwan. There, she is Maria.
