The great Bruce Willis recently retired for medical reasons. The man who was John McClane in the Die Hard saga has had a prolific career punctuated by roles, each more cult than the last. One film in particular swept the box office when it was released in the late ’90s, although it was panned by critics. And it is available for free on TF1+ for a limited time.
Michael Bay’s disaster movie
For some moviegoers, Michael Bay is nothing more than a craftsman of the 7th Art quick to make everything explode on the screen. For others, he is a genius of polished planning and breathtaking staging. Whether cinema purists mind it, Michael Bay’s expertise in composing shots and directing action is second to none in Hollywood. Bad Boys 2, Transformers and recently Ambulance are all serenades addressed to cinemas.
In 1998, this director of American origin offered the world a disaster film that would go down in history in cinema. Despite killer reviews (43% on RottenTomatoes), but a much more receptive audience (73% on RottenTomatoes), Armageddon takes everything in its path. With its comfortable budget of 140 million US dollars, it pocketed 553.7 million at the box office. This result makes it Michael Bay’s 6th greatest success in cinema even though the film was released at the end of the 20th century.
It must be said that the filmmaker had put all the chances on his side. Joining action star Bruce Willis are two other stars in the making : Ben Affleck crowned with the surprise success of Will Hunting and Liv Tyler who would play Arwen Undomiel two years later in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. The cast is completed by two iconic Hollywood supporting actors: Will Patton and Billy Bob Thornton.
Will the Earth be irreparably destroyed? The worst is to be feared. An asteroid the size of Texas is moving towards the planet at a speed of 35,000 kilometers per hour. To avoid this catastrophe, Dan Truman, director of NASA, instructs a team led by Harry Stamper, a great specialist in oil drilling, to land on the asteroid and place a nuclear charge there which will destroy it. – TF1+
