Forrest Gump is a film that has marked several generations and which continues to be talked about even today. And this, in part, thanks to the very touching character played by Tom Hanks, who is kindness personified, especially compared to the love of his life, Jenny. The latter is often singled out by fans of the film because of her selfishness towards Forrest, and is even considered anti-feminist. Robin Wright, his interpreter, decided to respond to these criticisms.
Le trio gagnant de Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks et Robin Wright makes his big comeback in 2024 with the film Here. And the last time the director collaborated with these two extraordinary actors was 30 years earlier, in 1994 for Forrest Gump. A film that has stood the test of time brilliantly, a theme that is also told Here promoted by Robin Wright.
The opportunity for the American actress to respond to criticism concerning her character of Jenny, deemed anti-feminist because it represents a free woman, but who is punished by her choices at the end of the film, by dying of an illness. A vision that his interpreter, Robin Wright, does not share at all.
Jenny is not a “Voldemort” for Forrest Gump according to Robin Wright
During his interview with the New York TimesRobin Wright responded to criticism regarding her character, and especially reacted to the argument that maintains that Jenny is an anti-feminist figure because of her life trajectory and her tragic destiny. “ No ! It’s not about thatshe began. People said she was a Voldemort to Forrest. I wouldn’t choose that as a term, but I would rather say that she was selfish. I don’t think it’s a punishment that she gets AIDS. She was so light and spontaneous – it was mostly selfishness she had towards Forrest. »
In the rest of the interview, Robin Wright supported his point. “ He was in love with her from day one. And she was just a butterfly, running and doing coke and dating a black panther. And then she got sick and told him: ‘It’s your child. But I’m dying.’ (…) I mean, it’s the most beautiful love story. » And if you love love stories Forrest Gump run and see Here by Robert Zemeckis, and with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, which is coming out at the cinema this November 6, 2024.
