It is the most viewed French film on the Netflix platform of all time. This enormous success produced by Xavier Gens will have the right to a sequel.
Historic success
This is the most watched French film in the history of the platform. This is the French card of the yearincluding internationally. Unprecedented popular success, the feature film reached 102 million views in a few months of operation.
If you haven’t yet understood, we are talking here about Under the Seine. Released on June 5 last on Netflix, Under the Seine was an unprecedented popular success. Directed by Xavier Gensthe film tells how a shark swims up the Seine and comes to terrorize the Parisians, while a triathlon is organized in the capital. Taken by Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyesit is a big-budget genre film that is quite rare in the French landscape.
Soon a sequel
This is the big surprise of this weekend. The actress Bérénice Bejo indeed blew to La Tribune Sunday that one Under the Seine 2 is in preparation:
In September 2025, we will shoot Sous la Seine 2. It will not be a simple sequel. This is another film, very different… but still with a shark.
The subject of this sequel had already been discussed during the promotion of the first part. Xavier Gens has never hidden his interest in developing a franchise. A classic approach in the genre since shark films often lead to sagas. Xavier Gens had notably explained on the microphone of Variety that:
If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris completely submerged underwater.
A statement that refers to the conclusion of Under the Seine. During his interview with La Tribune SundayBérénice Bejo also addressed the character of Anne Marivin In Under the Seine. The latter in fact embodies the Mayor of Parislargely inspired by several French political figures such as Valérie Pécresse or Anne Hidalgo. Bérénice Bejo then addressed the parallel between the Gens film and reality which often overtakes fiction:
Anne Hidalgo asked me to jump into the Seine with her. I declined. She also asked me if she had served as a model for the character of the mayor. In fact, it’s more of a mix of her and Valérie Pécresse.
In any case, the Parisian sharks will therefore return in a second Sous la Seine. We’ll let you tell us in the comments if this is a good idea or not.
