The fates were varied this weekend at the box office across the Atlantic. While Venom: The Last Dance kept his crown as leader in a very good way, the new film from the trio of Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright) got off to a disastrous start. We take stock.

Venom still strong in China

After a start below expectations, Venom 3 catches up (a little) by achieving a nice second weekend at 26.1 million dollars, losing “only” 49% of its audience. A good retention for a production of this type, which usually loses between 60 and 70% of its audience in the second weekend.

The Marvel film also posted good numbers in the rest of the world, notably maintaining first place in China with an additional 14.6 million. In the end, Venom: The Last Dance reached 90 million dollars in the US and a worldwide cumulative total of over 300 million. If the film maintains its good international scores, it can hope to reach the total of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (501 million) and give Sony a welcome success.

The beautiful career of Robot Sauvage continues. The Dreamworks animated film returned to second place in the ranking and even achieved a better score than last weekend with 7.5 million dollars earned (+10.9%). It is no longer far from the 300 million worldwide total and confirms its success despite its status as a modest budget film (78 million).

Some productions are rejoicing, but Hollywood legends are looking gloomy. In addition to the timid start of Juror #2 de Clint Eastwood en Europe, Herethe new film by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the future) marks a catastrophic departure. The director reunited for the occasion with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, his actors from Forrest Gumpand only earned 5 million dollars in three days for a budget estimated at 50 million greenbacks.

This is the worst start to Tom Hanks' career since News of the World in 2020, but above all a new public failure for Robert Zemeckis after the failure of Holy witches (2020, i.e. during the Covid period) and Welcome to Marwen (2018). The filmmaker's last real success dates back to Flight in 2012, which totaled $160 million for a budget of $31 million. It's starting to date…
