“The Gap” review: Saoirse Ronan as an alcoholic

This adaptation of the autobiography of journalist Amy Liptrot features Saoirse Ronan at the top of her art.

The American actress of Irish origin has this rare quality of always immersing the moviegoer in the emotional reality of her character. This is particularly true for Rona, protagonist of The an alcoholic who is trying to stop drinking.

In the original version, the title is The Outrun and refers to the shore of Orkney, an archipelago located in the far north of Scotland and place of origin of Rona. The coasts are, for the most part, uninhabited, the region is inhospitable and nature is violent… like certain humans (a magnificent scene also draws a parallel between the two).

The path to sobriety is not easy, to say the least. Between the techno music coming out of her headphones, the farm work and the contemplation of the waves and the ocean, Rona has trouble not wanting to drink. His relationship with his parents (Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves) is complex. Her father is violent, her mother has become a believer and Rona must confront her memories of a troubled childhood.

The young woman’s voice-overs on the superb Scottish landscapes, her reflections on life and happiness are an incursion into the painful process of sobriety, and Saoirse Ronan delivers with passion and accuracy all the nuances and subtleties to which she has introduced us. regulars since the start of his career.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
