Warning, this article contains spoilers.

This is not a love story, it’s a story about love, warns the film (500) days togetherdirected by Marc Webb, who loosely drew on his own personal experience. The film follows an office worker’s crush on his colleague. The plot is told from the point of view of Tom (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), so the audience experiences his crush and his fantasies of a serious relationship from his perspective.

On the other hand, we never have access to Summer’s mind (played by Zooey Deschanel) and it’s very frustrating. However, several discussions between our two heroes show that she wants to stay single, like the good disillusioned divorced child that she is, and that she wants to live this story lightly. She loves the Smiths and she clearly says she doesn’t want to get married, to commit, that she doesn’t believe in love. Okay, so she’ll end up dumping him because he smothers her too much, because they don’t have the same vision of their future, and will marry a guy after a few months random dudeproof that she is not completely closed to this idea either.

But Tom, Tom, TOM prefers to live on false hopes and turn a blind eye. Over the course of 500 Days, we sometimes hate Tom, sometimes Summer, because during our relationship life, we have all been sometimes Toms, sometimes Summers, and that can make us angry. What the film also shows is two characters who sleep together, who reveal themselves to each other, who see each other more or less regularly for a year and a half, and who disintegrate as their relationship increasingly resembles that of a traditional couple and routine sets in.

As noted Betchesthis 2009 film is stirring passions on TikTok, which seems to be discovering it for the first time fifteen years later – or maybe it’s nostalgia from old ladies like us who have worn this rom-com like a ribbon on our hearts since our teenage years? Internet users are posting clips, and one scene in particular has angered the crowds: the one where Summer insists to Tom to make him swallow that their story would be better if it were friendly.

“Kissing in the printer room? Holding hands at IKEA? Having sex in the shower?! Come on, friends, my balls!” shouts Tom, jealous and a little toxic, who has just punched a guy in a bar because he was flirting with his sweetheart. Yes, because that’s what is most painful for Internet users: watching a film about friendzone. But never forget that in another reality, if the movie was written from Summer’s point of view, Tom would just be a big pain in the ass.
