Former general turned politician, Yoav Gallant has long been considered a “hawk” within the government. He was fired for differences of opinion in November by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Yoav Gallant, former Israeli Defense Minister fired in November by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to differences over the conduct of the war in Gaza, announced Wednesday that he would give up his seat in Parliament.
“I will submit my resignation to the Speaker of the Knesset”declared Yoav Gallant in a televised speech. “I served the country for 35 years in the army and a decade in government and the Knesset. There are times when you need to pause and re-evaluate the direction you need to take.he added.
Former general turned politician, Yoav Gallant has long been considered a “hawk” within the government. He occupied a central role after the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023 on Israeli territory, which triggered the war in Gaza.
But after more than a year of fighting on several fronts, the former defense minister drew the wrath of the ultra-Orthodox parties, key allies of the Prime Minister's coalition, by ordering the conscription of 10,000 male members of this religious community of age to serve under the flags.
Yoav Gallant committed himself in his speech to “continue to work with all (one’s) strength to bring home” the hostages still held in the Gaza Strip since the October 7 attack.
