The terrorist threat is currently high in France, according to the Ministry of the Interior, which wishes to strengthen security for major events. But what figures does Beauvau rely on? The response from journalist Marc de Chalvron.
The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, asked the prefects on Monday to strengthen security for large gatherings. According to him, nine Islamist attacks were foiled in 2024. “Last year, there were also 613 investigations opened by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat), 80% of which were linked to jihadism”notes journalist Marc de Chalvron.
A number “almost twice as high as in 2023”underlines the reporter again. “The main threat concerns individuals who are already present on French soil, likely to switch to terrorism”he explains. Among them, “many young people, minors, more susceptible to the discourse circulating on the internet”.
Marc de Chalvron specifies that intelligence is particularly monitoring the release of certain prisoners from prison: in France, 419 people are currently incarcerated for terrorism and 61 have been released in 2024. “There should be about as many this year”explains the journalist, who recalls that these are subject to careful evaluation and appropriate surveillance. Finally, the French who left to fight in Syria in jihadist groups are also in the sights of the authorities.
