Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has broken his silence on players who have “limited progress” at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag’s start to the season has been tough, with Manchester United winning only three of their first eight matches across all competitions.
Back-to-back 3-0 home losses to Liverpool and Tottenham in the Premier League have intensified the pressure on the Dutchman.
Despite exploring other managerial options in the summer, INEOS chose to back Ten Hag by extending his contract until 2026.
However, his backroom staff was adjusted, with the likes of Benni McCarthy, Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag departing the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake came in as the new assistant managers for Ten Hag, with Van Nistelrooy rumoured to take over on an interim basis if the manager is sacked.
McCarthy, who was the forward’s coach throughout Ten Hag’s first two seasons at Old Trafford, has spoken on his time at the club in an interview with Portuguese outlet ZEROZERO.
The South African, who also played in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham, believes that not all of the players at United have tried their hardest under the current manager.
“Bruno [Fernandes] lives for football. Diogo [Dalot] is like that too,” praised McCarthy, speaking about two of the players he sees as an example at Old Trafford.
“If some of the United players had what Bruno and Diogo have, it would have been easier to get good results,” he added.
“They gave their all. Some didn’t. That ended up limiting the team’s progress because some players weren’t training to their full potential.
“Even in matches, the data showed us that some were performing at their peak and others a little bit below.”
