The solemn mass of the Ascension is broadcast live from the Saint-Nicolas church in Hérémence, in Valais. Chaired by Mgr Jean-Marie Lovey, it is broadcast on RTS 1 on Thursday May 9, 2024 at 11 a.m., and taken up by partner channels in Europe: SRF, RSI, France 2, RTBF, VRT and KRO.

Consecrated in 1971, the Hérémence church, which the locals affectionately nickname ‘concrete cathedral’, is considered the little sister of the Grande Dixence dam. Built by Basel architect Walter Förderer, this brutalist-style church symbolizes the link that the Heremensards have with this dam, which brought a certain prosperity to the region. The introductory film will discuss with the pastoral agent Yvan Delaloye the peace march, which is organized every year at Ascension, from Hérémence to the chapel of Pralong, under the Grande Dixence.

Dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myr, this church hosts the solemn Mass of the Ascension presided over by Mgr Jean-Marie Lovey, Bishop of Sion, and Abbot Pierre-Yves Maillard, vicar general, will preach. At their side, Father Etienne Catzeflis, local priest, and Father Andrien Taha, vicar. The musical part will be performed by the Saint-Nicolas d’Hérémence choir, which is celebrating fifty years in 2024. The choristers are under the direction of Samuel Emery. accompanied on the organ by Anne-Françoise Matthey-Doret and on the violin by Vérène Zay.

Directed by Raphaël Van Singer and produced by Grégory Roth for RTSreligion, this mass mobilized around thirty public service technicians for more than two days. The parishes of Hérémence and Val d’Hérens brought together altar servers, cable wo-men, sacristans, priests and all a group of parishioners to help out a lot. (cath.ch/gr)
