Here is the number of inhabitants in each department of Occitanie, and how these figures have progressed in recent years.
It is clear that life is good in Occitanie, which is the region which experienced the greatest demographic increase between 2016 and 2022 in France. By exceeding the threshold of 6 million inhabitants thanks to an increase of + 0.8%, Occitanie is on the verge of becoming the third most populous region, quickly catching up with New Aquitaine. Here are the figures as of January 1, 2022:
- Île-de-France: 12,380,964 inhabitants (+ 0.4%)
- Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: 8,163,884 inhabitants (+ 0.5%)
- New Aquitaine: 6,113,384 inhabitants (+ 0.5%)
- Occitanie: 6,080,731 inhabitants (+ 0.8%)
A great dynamic driven by Haute-Garonne, the French department which gained the most inhabitants over the period 2016-2022 (+ 1.3%) and Hérault which is also on a good run (+ 1.2 %).
At this rate, Toulouse will soon be able to boast of being the third city in France ahead of Lyon. With 511,684 inhabitants (+ 36,246 between 2016 and 2022), the Pink City will soon look down on the “capital of gastronomy” and its 520,774 inhabitants (+ 6,000 between 2016 and 2022). On the other hand, the Lyon metropolitan area remains more populated than the Toulouse metropolitan area.
