The Brignoud level crossing, in Isère, was listed as one of the most dangerous in France. It is no longer possible to borrow it.

A bridge of almost 600 meters now spans the railway line which connects to Montmélian. It has been accessible since Friday December 20 at 7 a.m.

Until now, vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians had to use the level crossing located at the entrance to the town. Nearly 60 trains travel on this railway line every day, crossing the path of around 13,000 vehicles.

Until December 31, the bridge and level crossing will coexist, before Avenue Robert Huant becomes a dead end at the station.

This new bridge offers a new, more secure route for motorists from surrounding communities and should make traffic flow more smoothly.

“When there is a train that stops at Brignoud station, waiting times at the level crossing are extended. Traffic then goes back onto the roads, on the bridge and also at the Brignoud exit ramp. So , this bridge will bring smoother and more secure traffic”rejoices Patrick Beau, mayor (various) of Villard-Bonnot.

Since the accident in Allinges (Haute-Savoie) in 2008, a collision between a school bus and a train which caused the death of seven people, there has been a plan to strengthen the safety of road users at crossings. level. Those considered to be “at risk” are listed and need to be edited.

In Isère, there now remains only one level crossing considered to be “at risk” : “We are currently carrying out work in the commune of La Verpillière on a level crossing which is in the middle of the town and which also poses safety problems”, explains Bernard Perazio, vice-president (various right) of the Department of Isère in charge of mobility.

For the Brignoud bridge, the investment is 15 million euros. This first stage is part of a more global project in the sector worth 50 million euros, including the reconstruction of the Brignoud road bridge, burned in April 2022, and the Bella Via road bike project.

“The project is only the beginning, says Coralie Bourdelain, vice-president (miscellaneous) of the Grenoble area mixed mobility union (Smmag). It will be finalized when we have the bridge over the Isère, the soft mode gateway over the Isère and which will be connected to Brignoud station.”

The road bridge over Isère will begin construction next March for entry into service at the end of 2026.
