Adopted in June 2023 and entered into force in December 2025, the European regulation against deforestation imposes rigorous obligations in terms of traceability and sustainability on companies exporting to the EU, in seven product lines. Vietnam, whose exports of coffee, wood and rubber are particularly affected by these new requirements, will have to put in place robust monitoring systems to guarantee the conformity of its products, said Nguyên Dô Anh Tuân, head of the Directorate of MADR international cooperation.
Thanks to the leadership of the MADR, the close coordination of the Agriculture and Rural Development Services of the provinces of Dak Lak and Lâm Dông, the technical and financial support of international organizations such as the IDH, as well as the participation active businesses and farmers, the pilot program resulted in “successful creation of EUDR compliant databases in four districts”an indiqué Nguyen Do Anh Tuan.
“Thanks to this system, we can now irrefutably demonstrate that our coffee is produced responsibly, without contributing to deforestation, which will allow us to conquer new markets and retain our existing customers”a dit Nguyen Do Anh Tuan.
From November 2023 to December 2024, IDH coordinated with the cooperation group enterprises to design the forest and coffee growing area database system. The system provides companies with direct access to all the information necessary to meet EUDR requirements, significantly simplifying the process of traceability of their products.
IDH is proud to play a leading role in the development of this system, which provides an important foundation in building a sustainable supply chain for the Vietnamese coffee industry, said Tran Quynh Chi, representative of HDI.

The IDH calls on stakeholders to not only continue to share and complement data to create a comprehensive national database system updated annually, but also to use this database to evaluate, implement strategies for mitigating risks and proactively responding to new demands from international markets such as low emissions, farmer prosperity and zero deforestation, Quynh Chi said.
In November 2024, the EU announced its decision to postpone the implementation of the EUDR until December 2025. According to Mara Grimminger, international relations assistant at the EC’s Directorate-General for the Environment, the commissioning of This database constitutes a major step forward in bringing the Vietnamese coffee sector into compliance with the strict requirements of the EUDR.
The postponement of the implementation of the EUDR provided a valuable opportunity for industries, including those in Vietnam, to thoroughly prepare and put in place the necessary systems to ensure full compliance with the EUDR, thereby promoting a smooth and effective transition, she stressed, calling for seizing this opportunity to prepare, take concrete measures and effectively respond to the EUDR requirements, thereby paving the way for a sustainable future for Vietnam’s coffee industry.
