An explosion near a residential building
Tuesday morning, a explosive device hidden in a scooter exploded in front of a residential building located on Riazanski Avenue, in the southeast of Moscow. According to statements by the Russian Investigative Committee, responsible for the main investigations in the country, the explosion cost the life of Igor Kirillov, commander of the Russian nuclear, chemical and biological defense forces, as well as his deputy.
Images broadcast by local media show the entrance to the building heavily damaged and the windows of neighboring apartments broken. Investigators have opened criminal proceedings for murder and are currently examining the exact circumstances of the incident.
Putin takes stock of the fighting
Igor Kirillov had held his position since 2017. Last October, he was sanctioned by the United Kingdom for his alleged role in the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. His assassination comes as Russia is leading an offensive in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
The day before the explosion, President Vladimir Putin presented the military assessment for the year 2024. He welcomed the advances of Russian troops in Ukraine and affirmed that Moscow was maintaining “l’initiative” on the forehead.
