On May 3, 2022, passengers are scheduled to depart from New York on a Lufthansa flight, heading to Budapest via Frankfurt. But 128 of them were blocked from boarding, explains the Parisian.

The company argued that some would not have respected the rules such as wearing a mask against Covid or the ban on gathering in corridors and near emergency exits.

Many of them “wore distinctive clothing typically worn by Orthodox Jewish men,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Record fine

Faced with multiple complaints, the company negotiated agreements on a case-by-case basis. But more than 40 complaints remained pending.

The US Department of Transportation at Lufthansa finally decided on this record $4 million fine.
