Already 4 years ahead of its objectives in 2023, the port of Tanger Med continues to show an unprecedented increase in its annual activities. In 2024, the port complex will have handled 10,241,392 containers, surpassing the symbolic mark of 10 million, as well as the previous record of 8,617,410 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This growth represents 18.8% compared to 2023, according to the periodic report which confirms the site’s leadership in the Mediterranean.
In total, the complex handled 142 million tonnes of goods in 2024, or more than 16.2% than in 2023. According to a press release, this result is explained in particular by the “strengthening of certain installations, the commissioning new equipment and optimization of maritime calls to reduce waiting and maneuvering times. Furthermore, 3,047,387 passengers passed through the year (+13%), including a large part during Operation Marhaba 2024.
In detail, the Tangier Med port handled 516,842 TIR trucks in 2024, or more than 8.1% compared to 2023. This dynamic is mainly driven by the traffic of industrial products (+6.8%) and agri-food ( +7.2%). The same source reports that “the two vehicle terminals of the port complex handled a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024”, or more than 4% compared to the year before.
“This traffic includes 368,843 vehicles for export, produced by the Renault factories in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, 170,519 vehicles exported by the Stellantis factory in Kénitra, 34,100 vehicles in transshipment and 27,410 vehicles in import,” we add. With a total of 584,945 tonnes, solid bulk traffic saw very slight growth (+1%).
-Hydrocarbons also totaled a volume of 7,640,524 tonnes. A large part of this 22% drop is due to the transfer of the majority of imports “to the new storage facilities newly commissioned in other Moroccan ports”.
In terms of maritime calls, the port recorded a total of 17,479, up 3.42% compared to 2023. 1,217 mega-ships of more than 290 meters were concerned (+13.74%). In its previous annual report, the complex has already experienced the highest overall traffic in the Mediterranean and more than 50% of the tonnage handled by all ports in Morocco.
