Morocco marks a strong return to the American citrus market. After a notable decline in 2023, Moroccan orange exports to the United States reached record volumes in 2024, as reported by EastFruit. In the first 11 months of the year, the Kingdom shipped more than 20,000 tonnes of oranges, a dramatic increase compared to 2023.

Between January and November 2024, Moroccan orange exports tripled compared to the previous year, recording an increase of 3.5 times. This volume exceeds the previous record set in 2022 by almost 10%. Revenues generated by these exports also reached record highs, amounting to $29.6 million.

Historically, before 2013, exports of Moroccan oranges to the United States were irregular. However, since then, they have stabilized, becoming a pillar of agricultural trade between the two nations. In 2018 and 2022, Morocco had already managed to ship more than 10,000 tonnes. The year 2024 marked a key milestone, with more than 20,000 tonnes exported for the first time.

In 2024, the United States has consolidated its position as the leading importer of Moroccan oranges, accounting for more than 40% of the country’s total exports in this sector. Morocco now ranks fourth among orange exporters to the US market, behind heavyweights like Chile, South Africa and Mexico, which collectively supply nearly 85% of volumes.

Despite intense competition, Morocco has been able to take advantage of its strategic export window. The peak period, between April and July, coincides with the start of the export season for Chile and South Africa, while that of Mexico is coming to an end. In 2024, this period has been extended until September and October, providing Morocco with an additional competitive advantage.

The path to this record was not without obstacles. In 2023, orange production in Morocco has been significantly affected by climate change, water shortages and severe droughts. These conditions led to a historic decline in exports that year. However, the efforts of Moroccan producers and their ability to adapt have enabled a spectacular recovery in 2024.
