Keep your eyes peeled: next Saturday January 25 and Sunday January 26, the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) and the National Museum of Natural History invite all those who are curious about nature to devote an hour to observe and count the birds in their garden. A great opportunity to take part in a national event of science participative. Enough to reconnect with nature, even in the corner of a window.
Every observation counts
If you have one, bring it binocularsmake yourself comfortable (and well bundled up if you are outdoors), and observe. You will become the witness of a winged ballet which will allow you to learn more about the health of garden bird populations. “Sparrows, tits, robins, nuthatch… Who will be there this year? And be careful, each species must be counted, even pigeons! », recalls the LPO.
The data collected will help to better understand the reasons that lead birds to frequent our gardens and allow us to monitor species population trends during winter.
How to participate in the count?
You don't have to be an expert in ornithology to participate, you just need to have a little time and enjoy watching what's happening in your garden and know how to count. Easy :
-- Choose your observation location: balcony, garden or public park.
- Take an hour on January 25 or 26 to go bird watching.
- Note for each species the maximum number of individuals seen at the same time.
- Send your observations to the website www.oiseaudesjardins.fr.
If you are a novice: the site is full of identification sheets, to help you distinguish, for example, a house sparrow from a speckled speck or any other species.
How can you not count the same birds several times?
Note only the maximum number of birds observed per species. If you successively observe 4 blue tits, then 2 and finally 1, only note 4 blue tits and not 7 (4+2+1).
