As part of the progress resulting from the recent “Bio Plateaux” conference held in Paramaribo, which resulted in a joint declaration on November 1, 2024 in favor of the creation of a Regional Observatory on transboundary water resources and aquatic biodiversity of the Guiana Plateau, Riad Nurmohamed, Minister of Public Works of Suriname, was received at the Territorial Hotel, this Monday, January 20, 2025.

During this meeting, discussions focused on sharing information on major issues, such as:

  • The deterioration of water quality,
  • The growing impacts of global warming,
  • The phenomena of flooding and drought,
  • Difficulties in accessing this essential resource: drinking water.

Discussions which also aimed to return to the field visits carried out by the minister, and as indicated by local elected officials Tiarrah Steenwinkel and Mirta Tani, to share around this desire to find concrete and sustainable solutions to respond to the challenges. linked to the management and preservation of water resources on the Guiana plateau.

Riad Nurmohamed, Minister of Public Works of Suriname, shared his impressions of the foreshadowing of this observatory and its sustainability, a model of innovative and supportive cross-border cooperation, in the face of the environmental and climatic challenges of these territories.

The Observatory will constitute a real decision support platform, offering public and private decision-makers tools for optimal management of natural resources, while promoting the sustainable development of the Guiana Plateau.

This visit is part of the BIO-PLATEAUX initiative, a project led by the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana (CTG), in collaboration with: The International Office for Water (OiEau), The General Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DGTM), The National Center for Space Studies (CNES), The Guyana Water Office (OEG), The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB).
