Beat Jans and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset discussed on Tuesday in Davos the implementation of the ECHR judgment condemning Switzerland for climate inaction. For the people of Fribourg, the ruling leaves room for a political discussion.
The Confederation has submitted a report on the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Mr. Berset told Keystone-ATS on Tuesday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF). This document will now be examined by the Committee of Ministers, made up of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe.
The pan-European court demanded greater commitment from Switzerland on the climate issue, but without saying what the objective was to be achieved. Furthermore, since the publication of the judgment, progress has been made in Switzerland.
‘Everything is moving and that’s a good thing,’ added the Secretary General of the Council of Europe after his meeting with the Federal Councilor.
Values to defend
-The Strasbourg Court ruled in favor of the organization of Elders for the Climate against Berne in April 2024. The association considered that the Confederation was not doing enough to protect elderly women against the consequences of climate change.
Alain Berset must stay in Davos until Thursday morning. His goal is to make as many contacts as possible, he added. He intends to commit to the values of the Council of Europe, such as democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
