a new commitment to the Breton language

The small town of Locmalo, located in Morbihan, strengthens its attachment to Breton culture by officially committing to the promotion of the Breton language. On Thursday January 9, 2025, the municipality and the Kafe Bara Amonenn association signed the charter Yes to Bretonsupported by the Public Office of the Breton Language (OPLB).

During this ceremony, several emblematic figures were present, notably Paul Molac, deputy for Morbihan and active defender of the Breton language. The mayor of Locmalo, Jean-Charles Lohé, and Jean-Alain Thomas, representative of the Kafe Bara Amonenn association, also participated in this significant event. This signature concretizes the common desire of local actors to integrate Breton into the daily life of the municipality.

The charter Yes to Breton : a tool to revitalize Breton

Launched in 2001 as part of the European Year of Languages, the charter Yes to Breton aims to encourage local initiatives in favor of the Breton language. This certification process is based on three main axes:

  1. The display of Breton in public spaces.
  2. The diffusion of linguistic knowledge.
  3. The use of Breton in interactions with the public.

Signatories can progress through different levels, depending on the number of concrete actions they commit to carrying out. Locmalo chose to start with the level 1corresponding to the implementation of at least five actions among the 57 proposed.

Concrete commitments for Locmalo

The municipality of Locmalo has decided to take significant measures to promote Breton in its daily operations. Among the first actions planned are:

  • The installation of bilingual signs at the entrance and exit of the municipality.
  • The publication of a bilingual editorial in the municipal bulletin.
  • Printing invitation cards for municipal events in French and Breton.
  • A survey of parents to assess the demand for bilingual education.

These initiatives are part of an approach aimed at making the Breton language more visible and accessible within the municipality.

The association Kafe Bara Amonenn, a key player

Since 2008, the Kafe Bara Amonenn association has been involved in teaching Breton for adults. She also signed the charter Yes to Breton at level 1, by committing to several actions, such as:

  • The production of bilingual documents for its events.
  • The use of Breton in its logos, stamps and communication media.
  • The integration of Breton into the agenda of its meetings.

The two signatories give themselves a deadline of two years to implement these commitments. This partnership between the municipality and the association reflects a common desire to preserve and promote the Breton language, a central element of the region's cultural heritage. Locmalo, through this commitment, actively participates in the revitalization of Breton and sets an example for other Breton communities.

With these initiatives, Locmalo proves that it is possible to combine tradition and modernity to build a future where the Breton language finds its place in daily life.
