Coming out of the Champions Cup group stage, the players of the French XV are already looking ahead to the imminent start of the 6 Nations Tournament. Around ten days before the opening match, the English media Ruck was based on a survey site in order to carry out a Top 5 most overrated players in the history of the 6 Nations…and it is a Frenchman who comes number 1.
The Top 5 most overrated players in the 6 Nations
First of all, it is worth remembering that such a classification is very subjective, the player overrated by a supporter can be the untouchable hero of his neighbor. In this case, such a criterion necessarily pushed voters to deliberately provocative choices and comments.
5. George North (Wales)
This Top 5 of the most overrated players in history starts strong with George North, 121 caps for Wales and 47 tries. Not bad for an overrated player, one might think.
“He had a few good years between 2011 and 2013 and then he disappeared. He was never again as good as the commentators made him think,” wrote one voter.
4. Chris Ashton (England)
Loved or hated, the Englishman Chris Ashton (44 caps, 20 tries) left no one indifferent during his career. What cannot be taken away from him is that he was a ruthless finisher, as evidenced by his record for tries scored in a Top 14 season (24).
Comment: “Lazy player with a terrible volume of activity, correct positioning which allowed him to complete the good work of other players and take undeserved light. Poor tackler too. »
3. Alun-Wyn Jones (Wales)
On the 3e On the podium of this Top 5 of the most overrated players in the history of the 6 Nations Tournament, we find not only a legend of Welsh rugby but of world rugby: the record holder for international selections Alun-Wyn Jones (158). Perhaps a little less dashing in its last seasons, but still!
-“In the end he was only selected because otherwise Wales Online was going to overheat and set Cardiff on fire.” Everything in measure!
2. Sergio Parisse (Italy)
Here again, it is a whole page in the history of rugby that we are attacking by placing Sergio Parisse at 2e place in the ranking, as the Italian of Argentinian origin carried the Squadra Azzurra on his back for years. Just 91 selections including 69 in the Tournament and each time as a starter!
“Okay, he was fantastically talented, but he was a show horse rather than a work horse.” A little hard…
1. Sébastien Chabal (France)
Finally comes first place in this Top 5 of the most highly rated players in the history of the 6 Nations Tournament, whose very relative honor goes to a player from the French XV, Sébastien Chabal (62 caps). Who is accused of having built his reputation on his beard and one or two devastating tackles, basically.
“His appearance was half of his reputation. Every time he was watched he would fade away,” one comment said. “Good 6, terrible 8, 2e line even worse,” asserts another.
Whether certain players are missing from this ranking or whether others have nothing to do with it, everyone will have their own opinion.
