Serge Quiquerez started producing wine at the end of the 1980s, for his personal use. He suffered several failures before achieving his goals. He has been tending his vines at a place called La Coire, in the Grandfontaine region, for more than 30 years now, and transforming the fruit of his harvest into wine.
“I tried Pinot, but as soon as three drops fell, it had to be treated a lot,” explains the retired chimney sweep. “The Chardonnay did not reach maturity in the climate here, it became very sick. And not better with Chasselas. Something that would have been interesting is Pinot Gris. It’s a little more resistant to disease.”
A resistant grape variety
Finally, he set his sights on the Léon Millot, which requires no treatment, he says. The choice of a 100% natural product was close to his heart, specifies the Gueillemet – or a resident of Grandfontaine – who collaborates with Jean-Paul Crelier. The latter, residing in Fahy, also cultivates a small area of the same grape variety in Chevenez.
