Brecht Dejaegere (33) is back in Kortrijk, where it all began, after a long and successful career. The midfielder hopes to allow the Kerels to avoid the play-downs.
Brecht Dejaegere feels the responsibility to bring balance to the Flandrian team. With nine games remaining, five of which are against top six teams, Kortrijk continue to fight to get out of the red zone.
“With 27 points still to be won, a gap of six points is possible to close,” says the midfielder optimistically in The Sunday. Matches against direct competitors such as Westerlo, Cercle and OHL will be crucial.
Kortrijk can beat Anderlecht on Sunday and Club Brugge next week.”
Dejaegere emphasizes that he is not thinking about play-downs. “It’s my worst nightmare. I just want to think about this twelfth place. There are still 27 points to win, if we can string together a series and create a positive dynamic, getting back into the game will be possible. Especially since it has already been proved that in this competition, everyone can beat everyone, so Kortrijk can also beat Anderlecht on Sunday and Club Brugge next week.
-Despite the stress of fighting relegation, Dejaegere does not regret his return. “It doesn’t feel like playing for titles or promotions, but the pressure is similar. What makes it difficult is my great attachment to Kortrijk. This love of the club creates extra pressure, but also extra motivation .”
Dejaegere is back to fight for the survival of the club. “I’m here to make my contribution,” he concludes. “It would be different if I had played at Beerschot now, for example. Then the love for the club, like for most players, would be less.”
