François Vérove, wanted for more than three decades, was nicknamed the “Grêlé” because of the scars on his skin, signs seen on his face by witnesses or victims. In September 2021, while the Parisian investigating judge was looking for the “pockmarked”, DNA tests were decided on former gendarmes assigned to the Paris region in the 80s and 90s. It is in this context that François Vérove had to go to the PJ in Montpellier – because he lived in 2021 in Hérault – for a genetic sample. He preferred to kill himself in an apartment in Grau-du-Roi. His DNA was indeed that of the “Grélé”, sought by all the French police for almost 35 years.
