This town in Calvados has a world scrabble champion!

The club's general meeting Fun' Scrabble opened on Tuesday January 14, 2025 in Falaise (Calvados)by the president Philippe Genderain the presence of Mayor Hervé Maunoury and the advisor responsible for community life, Philippe Drouet.

Three new recruits were recorded in 2024 (including one return), which brings the number to 18 members with still a very high proportion of women (16/18) with very flowery names: Rose, Pâquerette or even Mimosa.

Note also the organization, at the beginning of June, of a scrabble day which took place in the village hall of Saint-Pierre-du-Bû during which two games could be played “with a break at lunchtime to share a little meal.”

Throughout the year, scrabble players meet every Tuesday afternoon in the Holmann room to play a duplicate game. Very concentrated, words flow from everywhere. Scrabble duplicate is a variation that eliminates the part of chance due to drawing letters.

Indeed, each round, a referee draws the same letters for everyone. Each player then has 3 minutes to find the word earning the most points and write it on a response slip.

At the end of three minutes, the referee collects the ballots and announces the top, that is to say the most expensive word found by the players, the number of points it brings and the place where it is on the the grid.

All players place this “top” on their grid, whether they have found it or not, but of course only score the number of points that they themselves found. This technique allows everyone to gauge themselves against others but also to discover new words.

“All these games are always played in a very friendly spirit. » The office has not changed, still made up of Philippe Gendera as president, Danièle Lomet as secretary and Hélène Guibert as treasurer.

Tournaments and championship

Five members of the club continue to take out an official license (the season extends from September to September), which authorizes them to participate in the various tournaments and allows the club to have the training software that the members use every week.

During last season, Hélène Guibert participated in 7 tournaments including the VRD (Vermeil Rubis Diamant) national finals and series 4 in Vichy, and Aix Les Bains. Beyond her result obtained in the Series 4 qualifications on November 24 (25th out of 148), which allows her to participate again in the French championships in Vichy next May, she won a world champion title in Montauban in the month of July.

For his part, Philippe Gendera competed in 6 tournaments with a result of 41st out of 122 participants last November during the VRD qualifications, as well as during a world simultaneous last Saturday, posting a result of 300th/3700.

Marie-Jeanne Sore, Danièle Lomet and Alexandra Biou participated in 4 or 5 tournaments, with varying success. Alexandra participated in the Vichy championships and qualified again for 2025 in series 6.
