This is one of the lessons from the demographic data published by INSEE at the end of December 2024. In , Issou, unlike neighboring municipalities, is losing inhabitants.

Between 2011 and 2022, its population has declined of 697 people to settle at 3,944 Issoussois. At the same time, more than a thousand additional Gargenvillois or Limayens were recorded. Juziers gained a little more than 200 inhabitants and Porcheville around a hundred.

“This is not a new situation,” assures Mayor Lionel Giraud. This is a heavy trend dating from the 1990s which the new constructions, completed or in progress, only partially correct. »

More housing, fewer inhabitants

A glance at the tables of the institute specializing in the production of statistics reveals a rapid aging of the population in the municipality. The proportion of people under 30 is tending to decrease while the number of people over 60 has doubled.

“We paradoxically have more housing but the dominant family model has changed,” continues the councilor.

“The phenomenon of separation of couples and the dual residence of children accentuate the stagnation of the population level. »

Two residences under construction

When leaving the nest, young adults often have to do the choice to settle elsewhere. “They cannot wait for the construction of social housing to end despite their deep attachment to the municipality,” he notes.

Two real estate programs are currently under construction: along departmental road 190, on the site of the former Lidl store, and on rue de Rangiport, near the recycling center. The works for this latest project, including 30 houses of 90 m² grouped in twos or threes, have just been launched.

What support for seniors?

Older people from Issouss also want to stay in the town. “A global reflection on the senior years must be carried out, it will be a interesting issue for the mandate of 2026-2032, or even 2038,” affirms Lionel Giraud, not yet decided on his return to the voters.

“The next mayor will have to look at the different existing models of dedicated residences, keeping in mind that the municipality cannot replace private initiative in terms of money and technical skills. »

In order to form certainties, the councilor says he is waiting for census resultin progress in the municipality. “We will have a more refined vision than with statistical models,” he predicts. I think that by counting the inhabitants of the new residences, the town should return to the 4,000 inhabitants mark. »
