In the Austin, Texas factory, Tesla had to force some of its employees responsible for assembling the Cybertruck to move to the lines dedicated to the Model Y. As a result of sharply declining sales, the Cybertruck had to be put shutdown in the factories, and employees obtained several days of compulsory leave last December. The manufacturer did not see the future in a positive light and sent a questionnaire to the Cybertruck teams to find out who would be willing to join the teams in charge of the Model Y. Following the lack of interest from the workers, Tesla should have force a party to change lines.
In the employee survey, Tesla asked: “As we continue to evaluate schedules to meet business needs, we will be modifying the Model Y and Cyber schedules, and we want to make sure your preferences are taken into account. » The need to switch part of the workforce from one to the other was becoming strong, that said, in view of the lack of interest in the Cybertruck and the increased push for the Model Y, which has just gotten a refresh in China , which will also benefit the United States and Europe. For the Cybertruck, 2025 still remains a mystery as Tesla is still struggling to sell its high-end Fundation Series models, and the cheapest version ($61,000) is no longer planned to be released.
Currently, you have to pay more than $74,000 to buy a Cybertruck. The Fundation version asks for an extra $20,000, and the promise of $39,990 projected on the day the model was introduced in 2019 is far behind us. According to different estimates, Tesla would have delivered between 35,000 and 50,000 Cybertrucks in 2024, where Elon Musk hoped for several hundred thousand. The man had however pointed out that sales should be progressive, accelerating over the years, but the experience of this first year of marketing showed above all the opposite, with a certain attraction at the beginning, and a loss of steam in path.
After a difficult year 2024, very useful help in 2025
Despite its unique style and the publicity given by certain influencers and rappers, the Cybertruck has also attracted bad publicity through a series of recall campaigns. The electric pick-up has stuck to this image of a car with questionable construction and potentially at risk. To explain its declining sales, however, we must not forget the situation which also affects its competitors, because in the third quarter of 2024, the Cybertruck was still doing better than a Ford F-150 Lightning or a Rivian R1T.
Since January 1, the unique electric pick-up has become eligible for the $7,500 tax credit, enough to lower its price by 10%. This only concerns the two-motor version, but at least brings it a little closer to the $60,000 version that was removed from Tesla's website last year.
