A candidate withdraws in view of the race for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ).
Candidate Frédéric Beauchemin is joining forces with Pablo Rodriguez, according to information from The Press confirmed by -.
Some members of his team will also join the organization of Mr. Rodriguez, considered by several observers as the favorite to succeed Dominique Anglade, who left office in November 2022.
This turnaround comes as the race officially begins on Monday.
His rallying should also be announced that morning in a Montreal hotel where the press has been invited. The principal interested party should then explain the reasons for his withdrawal, which have not yet been specified.
Frédéric Beauchemin is the MP for Marguerite-Bourgeoys, in the southwest of Montreal. He was the one and only member of the Liberal caucus to express interest in the party’s leadership.
The race should normally have a minimum of four candidates.
In addition to Pablo Rodriguez – who is a member of Parliament in Ottawa and who played an important role in the Trudeau government from 2019 to 2024 – the former president of the Federation of Quebec Chambers of Commerce Charles Milliard is in the running, as is former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre and lawyer Marc Bélanger.

Most caucus members who could support either candidate have already done so.
Charles Milliard, for example, will be able to count on the support of Virginie Dufour, Madwa Nika-Cadet, André Fortin and André A. Morin, while Pablo Rodriguez has already received the support of Désirée McGraw, Michelle Setlakwe and Linda Caron.
Frédéric Beauchemin withdraws his candidacy even though he had the support of Sona Lakhoyan Olivier. We do not yet know if she will also decide to support Pablo Rodriguez.
Denis Coderre and Marc Bélanger, for their part, do not yet have support in the caucus.
The next leader of the PLQ will be known on June 14 at the end of a congress to be held in Quebec City. The party is led on an interim basis by the MP for LaFontaine, Marc Tanguay.
