Depollution of Hann Bay: Bringing industrial units up to standard in sight – Lequotidien

The Hann Bay depollution project will, beyond improving water quality, the living environment and the health of populations, bring industrial units up to standard through the installation of pretreatment systems. wastewater from factories, said yesterday the Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye.
“Beyond improving water quality, the living environment and the health of populations, the project will bring industrial units up to standard by installing systems for pre-treating wastewater from these units. “, said the minister.

Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, according to Aps, chaired the meeting of the steering committee of the Hann Bay decontamination project, in the presence of the administrative authorities of the Dakar region and financial partners.

“The project will also promote the application of the polluter pays principle, thanks to the new industrial sanitation fee,” he added.

He indicated that “the new sanitation fee has become effective since December 2024, with the signing by (himself) and by his colleague in charge of the Environment, Daouda Ngom, of the interministerial decree (n°034115 of 26 December 2024) setting the amount of the industrial sanitation fee and determining the invoicing and collection system.

Mr. Dièye assured that the works planned as part of this project will “manage industrial and domestic wastewater in this area which concentrates 80% of industrial establishments in Senegal”.

The minister recalled that Hann Bay, once one of the most beautiful in the world, has, for several decades, been facing “major environmental challenges linked in particular to the discharge of wastewater from industries and homes located along the beach. “.

These problems, he lamented, “have not only affected the coastal marine ecosystem, but have significantly degraded the quality of life of local populations, without forgetting their economic impacts on fishing and tourism”.

According to him, “it is precisely to reduce discharges and restore the ecological functions of Hann Bay that the government initiated, with the support of technical and financial partners, the depollution project whose implementation is entrusted to the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (Onas)”.
Launched in 2023, work on the Hann Bay depollution project will end in 2026.
