The population of Gers has progressed. But moderately. According to the latest figures published by INSEE (national institute of statistics and economic studies), the department had 192 649 habitants au 1is January 2022 (data entered into force on 1is January 2025). There were 190,664 in 2016 (+0.2%).

An increase that the Gers owes solely to the new installations since the natural balance remains very negative (-0.5% over the same period) when the net migration, he continues to be positive and does better than compensate for the losses (+0.7%).

far ahead, L'Isle-Jourdain soon above 10,000 inhabitants

But this assessment hides sometimes very different realities at the local level. There is Alsofar ahead with 22,825 inhabitants, an average annual increase of almost 1% since 2016. Which makes it return to the level that the prefecture experienced in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. And also Isle-Jourdainwhich, with a population half as high, continues to gain ground (9,499 inhabitants, or +1.41% per year). At this rate, it can hope to cross the threshold of 10,000 inhabitants. in about five years.

14 cities

And then there are the other small “towns”. It is generally considered that the name city applies to municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants. Below, there are villages. There are therefore, with these criteria, 14 towns in the Gers. Besides Auch and L’Isle-Jourdain, there are Condom (6 454 habitants), Fleurance (6 130), Eauze (4 060), Reading (3 685), Vic-Fezensac (3 578), Miranda (3 442), Gimont (3 110), Pavia (2 540), Samatan (2 478), Mauvezin (2 275), Nogaro (2 226) et Lombez (2 188).

This fairly exclusive club should not move for several more years. Except exodus in the last three, but they are still gaining inhabitants. On the other hand, Pujaudranwith 1,708 inhabitants, could become the fifteenth perhaps before the end of the decade. For Cazaubon (1 663) et Riscle (1,643) which have stagnated for decades this seems highly improbable.

Change at the bottom of the ranking

And so there are the villages. These are the 446 other municipalities (Gers had 461 in 2024, a new one, Cape Astaracsaw the light of day at the beginning of January replacing four of them). Here are those with fewer than 50 inhabitants (in ascending order). They are not that numerous and Roquepine has lost its status as red lantern that she had last year. Blousson-Sérian is now the smallest commune in the Gers.

  • Blousson-Sérian: 34
  • Roquepine: 36
  • Monpardiac : 38
  • Second: 41
  • Scieurac-et-Flourès and Sérempuy: 42
  • Blanquefort: 43
  • Gée-Rivière: 44
  • Larroque-Engalin et Mansencôme : 45
  • Courties and Maravat: 46
  • Ricourt : 47
  • Cabas-Loumassès : 48

One less in the smallest

There are therefore 14 municipalities with fewer than 50 inhabitants. That is as many as municipalities of more than 2,000. Or rather there were. Since one of them (Cabas-Loumassès) has now been absorbed into Cap-d'Astarac (which theoretically had 480 inhabitants in January 2022, when it did not yet exist).
