If season 3 will normally sign the end of Squid Game, the Netflix universe will continue well with other series including Squid Game : America according to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
As expected, season 2 of Squid Game has made a phenomenal comeback on Netflix. Three years after season 1, the sequel has in fact accumulated 68 million so-called complete views in just four days. A score never reached by any series (English and non-English) since the previous record was 45.1 million views for a season released on a Thursday with Bridgerton season 3 part 1 (Wednesday had garnered 50.1 million views, but was released on a Wednesday and therefore benefited from an extra day).
Obviously, given this goose that lays golden eggs, Netflix will do everything to perpetuate its franchise. Thus, season 3 of Squid Game could come out very quickly after the huge cliffhanger at the end of the second season. But even more, in addition to the reality TV version of the Korean series, we know that an American version, a priori titled Squid Game : Americais in preparation with David Fincher at the helm. And precisely, the creator of Squid Game gave some news.
GAME AMERICA OVER
It's difficult to completely understand David Fincher's trajectory with the Red N. The filmmaker is a bit everywhere at once, between a prequel series of Chinatowna bloody western and above all Squid Game : America. Fincher is in fact attached to this still very mysterious project, the details of which are difficult to reveal. Despite everything, one thing is certain, it is something that is well in the pipeline according to the creator of the Korean series as he confided to The Wrap :
“I know Netflix has a plan. They're not going to throw this idea in the trash. […] Maybe I'll be linked to one of his projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But season 3 will not mark the end of the Squid Game universe. »
Nothing particularly surprising then, but things do seem to be taking shape and moving forward. As shared by The Economic Times, the main actor of the series, Lee Jung-jae, was also enthusiastic about this American version, affirming “look forward to it” et “have high expectations” about him.
At this stage, it is not yet known whether it will be a reboot, a prequel, a sequel or a spin-off, but there is a good chance that the two series take place in the same universegiven Hwang Dong-hyuk's comments. We can therefore assume that Netflix and Fincher will not make a simple, uninteresting remake, but indeed a series where the events of Squid Game will have importance (through characters, places, situations, etc.).
Some are already trying to find possible links since a rumor claimed that Leonardo DiCaprio would be present in season 3. Indeed, according to rumor, the actor would have participated in a scene taking place in the United States in the biggest secret (season 3 having been filmed at the same time as season 2). Netflix has since rushed to refute this rumor, but it is undoubtedly the first of a long list to come.
Until Squid Game : America reveals a little more (casting, story, etc.), season 3 of Squid Game will indeed arrive in 2025, and possibly faster than we think. Season 2 is still available on the platform since December 26, 2024.
