The new mpox variant was detected for the first time in France, in Brittany. This is a woman who was infected after being in contact with two people returning from central Africa.
It was in a hospital in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) that a woman was diagnosed with the new mpox variant, more dangerous and more contagious, a first in France. The patient, a healthy thirty-year-old, was infected at home through contact with two people returning from Central Africa, where the virus is circulating. She consulted for fever and lesions such as chickenpox.
The new variant has already killed 500 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Clade 1b is transmitted by contact with a contaminated object, during a kiss or sexual intercourse, but also by projection of spit. Contagious, it is progressing rapidly in Europe. But today, in France, thanks to the surveillance system, the risk is limited. A vaccine exists and it is effective against the new variant. Vaccination is recommended for homosexual people or people with multiple partners.
