In August 2022, striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who previously played for ASSE and OM, was the victim of an armed robbery at his home in Barcelona. The Gabonese returned to the dramatic incident.
The life of a professional footballer is not all rhinestones and glitter. Far from it. Sometimes, and even very often, players who are victims of burglaries or, worse, armed robberies appear in the news section while they are at home. This was the case for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in August 2022, while the Gabonese was at his home in Barcelona.
Aubame, who notably passed through ASSE, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, was then preparing to sign for Chelsea, for a failed season, before returning to Ligue 1 at Olympique de Marseille. The painful memory he recounts was shared with our colleagues at The Athletic. And that sends shivers down your spine. “My oldest son came running and said, ‘Dad, there are guys in the house. They entered from outside, where my wife was smoking with my cousin and her boyfriend. They took it and entered the house. My wife was screaming. They had a gun. »
“It was a great fight and it’s still fresh in my mind. »
Aubameyang then chose physical combat with his attackers. With a simple bottle in his hand as a weapon. Time to have his jaw broken by one of the attackers and the former Marseille player no longer moves. His entire family is taken hostage. “I couldn’t do anything. If you do something wrong, something might happen to them. If I was alone, no problem. I can deal with it. But when you have a wife and children, it's different. » Once the attackers fled, leaving with jewelry in particular, Aubameyang observed the damage, without going to see a psychologist. A mistake according to him, as he admitted years later. “Yes, I made a mistake. After that, the children told me: “Dad, I don't want to go to school, I'm afraid something will happen there.” For a year, my youngest told me: “I can’t sleep alone.” It was a great fight and it is still present in my mind. »
Pierre-Emerick is living this season in a much calmer environment, within the Al-Qadsiah club, in Saudi Arabia.
