The start of 2025 marks a sad reminder of the challenges of road safety in the Gers, with a new fatal accident and worrying infractions noted during the first checks. The year 2024, already marked by an increase in accidents, seems to continue on a worrying trajectory, as in the Lot and Haute-Garonne. At the start of the year, the Gers prefecture takes stock of the year that has just passed, and the figures are not good.

A worrying increase in accidents in 2024

The first week of 2025 brings sad confirmation of the ongoing road safety challenges in the Gers. The prefecture reports that on Friday January 3, a motorcyclist lost his life on the department's roads, a tragedy which once again reminds us of the importance of vigilance on the roads. This sad event occurs in a context where the accident figures for 2024 are already alarming.

Indeed, in 2024, Gers recorded a significant increase in road accidents, with 145 accidents compared to 126 in 2023, an increase of 15%. This progression was accompanied by an increase in injuries (+20%) and a slight increase in deaths, going from 13 to 16 killed in one year.

The start of 2025 has not been spared from high-risk behavior either. During checks on New Year's Eve, 26 offenses were noted, including 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 3 for driving under drugs.. But it was especially on January 5 that the authorities once again reported extreme behavior, with a motorist stopped at 255 km/h. A speeding violation as shocking as it is dangerous, immediately leading to the withdrawal of the license and confiscation of the vehicle.

Despite declines in certain areas, such as withdrawals of licenses for alcohol and drugs, the problem of excessive speed remains worrying. In 2024, the number of licenses withdrawn for speeding increased significantly by 61 units, reaching 363 in total.
