It’s an unusual encounter to say the least. Coming home on Sunday evening, a couple living in the heights of Lausanne saw a lynx in their garden, located not far from the woods, we learn on the RTS.

The presence of the feline was confirmed late Monday morning. Pascale notices the animal a second time, wandering a few meters from the terrace of their house. The Lausanne resident then takes a photo through the window. With her husband, they subsequently called the wildlife warden.

“It’s always the animal we want to meet, because it’s majestic, it’s beautiful,” she said on Monday in “7:30 p.m.”. “It’s always impressive to see, and I had time to appreciate it.”

Unusual, but not unprecedented

Encountering a lynx so close to the city is not unheard of. Interviewed by RTS, Frédéric Hofmann, head of the hunting section at the canton’s General Directorate of the Environment, explains: “Their population is increasing slightly. So does the deer population, which is its main source of food. It is therefore not surprising to have more and more lynx approaching urban areas.”

Around fifty lynx are present in the canton of Vaud. The one seen by the Lausanne couple probably came from the Jorat woods and would have gotten lost. In the presence of the feline, the good practice is not to approach it or give it food. Calling the wildlife warden is a good reflex. The cantonal environment department reminds that their presence in town should be avoided.
