New vehicle sales figures for the year 2024 have been released by several manufacturers and we can already crown winners.
In Canada, General Motors dominates for a second year in a row with a market share of 15.4% – unheard of since 2010 – and 294,315 units sold, an increase of 11.9% compared to 2023. Its brands Cadillac and GMC each had their best year ever.
Helped by the arrival of new models, mainly the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the manufacturer also sold 31,967 electric vehicles, which represents an annual jump of 109%.
Ford ranks second as a manufacturer, having achieved 279,221 sales domestically in 2024, an increase of 16.1%. As a brand, no one has done better than them once again.
Unsurprisingly, its F Series (133,857 units) remains the most popular pickup truck for a 59th consecutive year and the best-selling vehicle for a 15th consecutive year, all categories combined. Its electric vehicles saw growth of 66.1%, with the Mustang Mach-E outselling the gas-powered Mustang almost three times.
For Toyota, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in Canada in 2024, sales reached a historic high of 238,933 new vehicles, with the RAV4 contributing greatly with its own record of 77,556 units. The latter remains the best-selling passenger vehicle nationally.
Note also that electrified vehicles (hybrid and electric) now represent 49.2% of the company’s overall vehicle sales, with 117,528 units. No other traditional manufacturer comes close to this percentage.
Finally, at Hyundai, 2024 was the best in its 41 years in Canada. Thanks to an increase of 13.9%, the Korean manufacturer sold 131,715 new vehicles – more than Honda/Acura and Stellantis. Even though dealer yards seem full of IONIQ 5s, more than 13,000 have found buyers in the last twelve months.
Speaking of Stellantis, its setbacks in 2024 resulted in an 18% drop in sales. The 129,945 units sold collectively by Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo and Fiat are less than the total of the Ford F-Series alone!
