Like every year, the holiday season was particularly busy in cinemas. While the most anticipated major Hollywood productions attracted crowds – and families – during the holidays, Quebec cinema did well thanks to the popularity of the films The Christmas cyclone et Miss Bottine. Here are 5 films that brought crowds to cinemas across the province during the Christmas holidays.

Moana 2 (6,5 M$)

After getting off to a spectacular start the weekend of its theatrical release at the end of November, raising more than $1.6 million in three days, the new Disney production continued its momentum during the holiday season. To date, the animated film recounting the adventures of Moana has grossed more than $6.5 million at the Quebec box office.

Mufasa: the lion king (3,2 M$)

Unsurprisingly, this prequel to the hit 2019 film has attracted crowds since its theatrical release at the start of the Christmas holidays. Supported by rave reviews, the family feature film directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) raised more than $3.2 million in theaters across the province.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (3 M$)

As is often the case during school holidays, animated family films were very popular during the holidays. Released five days before Christmas, the third part of the franchise Sonic the Hedgehog achieved great success in theaters, thanks to a collection of nearly $3 million at the Quebec box office.

Much was made of the “Glicked” phenomenon during the simultaneous release of the films Gladiator 2 et Wickedat the end of November. However, unlike our neighbors to the South where Wicked was, by far, the more popular of the two, the Quebec public rallied more behind the sequel to Ridley Scott’s cult film. That said, Wicked still performed well, collecting more than $2.8 million in theaters across the province.

Let us also mention the great success of the family film Miss Bottine, which to date has accumulated revenues of nearly $1.3 million.
