A tropical air has been crossing Switzerland since Saturday evening. Coming from the South Atlantic and the Mediterranean, this warm front, responsible in particular for the freezing rains this weekend, is a fatal blow to the snow, even at altitude. Temperatures will not drop again until Thursday, warns MétéoSwiss.

On average, it is now between 5 and 10 degrees warmer than three days ago. In certain regions, notably the Jura, temperatures even increased by more than 20 degrees in one weekend, MeteoSwiss indicated this Sunday in its blog.

Bye bye la neige

This tropical air is not taking its toll: it has swept away the cold air at all altitudes. If snow generally resists anticyclones well thanks to nighttime refreezing, wind, low altitude cloud cover, excessive temperatures and rain are fatal. And all these conditions are met, adds MétéoSuisse.

Moléson, for example, has already lost more than 30 centimeters of snow between Saturday and Sunday. Even above 2300 meters altitude, the loss fluctuates between 15 and 25 centimeters. The snow depth, previously excessive, is now falling within annual norms.

This westerly current will continue this week, specifies MétéoSwiss, with a still significant warm front on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures should drop again during the night from Thursday to Friday, and the snow may then return.
