After a conference on the commune of Vauchamps last December, the historian Arnaud Sarazin is organizing a new meeting on the theme of local heritage. This time, he is attacking Verdon, the last commune in alphabetical order around Montmirail.

The appointment is given on Monday January 20at 6 p.m., in the Barbara room of the Espace Loisir et Culture (ELC) in Montmirail.

On the program

To do this, he will use the results of his research in the historical archives of the territory et pictures.

Arnaud Sarazin gives some leads of his next intervention: “We can first of all remember that the local church, unlike many others, does not have a bell tower. Or at least, it no longer has one since it originally stood a short distance from the church, as revealed by the Napoleonic land register. The remaining religious building is most interesting, because sculpted bases are visible inside. The church also preserves a very beautiful Virgin and Child with grapes as well as glazed tiles which are reminiscent of those preserved in the abbey church of Orbais-l'Abbaye. Finally, it is dedicated to a Breton saint, Saint-Maclou, better known under the name of Malo. »

Focus on the village Lords

From his work, Arnaud Sarazin retains Gomer's family : “The conflict between Christophe de Gomer and Abbot Nicolas de la was at the origin of a real vendetta. Thus Christophe de Gomer was killed in 1571 at the hands of Nicolas de la Croix. His widow, Charlotte de Marle, decided to avenge his loss. Every evening, she made her children swear, on her husband's bloody clothes, to avenge their father's death. This was done since in 1577, Christian de Gomer assassinated the abbot not far from Verdon…”

Thus, the small village witnessed an exceptional event, including memory remains alive at the Breuil church: we still find there today the recumbent figure of Christophe de Gomer, restored by the sculptor Marius Giot. “This name is not foreign to the inhabitants of Verdon, because it is in fact he who designed the statue of the poilu which sits near the Verdonnelle. », continues Arnaud Sarasin.
