No miracle for Deschwanden and Switzerland

No miracle for Deschwanden and Switzerland
No miracle for Deschwanden and Switzerland

Simon Ammann (4 times), Hansjörg Sumi (1) and Walter Steiner (2) will still have to wait to find a successor. It has now been eleven years since any Swiss stood on the podium of the fabulous Austro-German tour. A competition that no Swiss jumper has ever managed to win in more than 70 years of existence…

The 33-year-old from Lucerne had sowed some hopes, after a successful start to the season. He then confirmed during the first three stages of this great holiday gathering at the end and beginning of the year. The Swiss finished 6th in Oberstdorf (Germany), before taking 2nd place in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (Germany) and finishing just off the podium in Innsbruck (Aut). Enough to almost make the untouchable Austrians tremble.

Unfortunately for Deschwanden and Swiss ski jumping fans, there was no miracle on Monday in Bischofshofen. The Swiss had to settle for 10th place after the first round, with his jump measured at 133.5 meters. The Lucerne native then flew 4.5 meters further during the final jump of the 2024/2025 Tour, but lost another rank in the process. In the end, he ranked 5th overall in the competition, still nearly 40 lengths from the much-hoped-for podium.

The great honors were taken by the Austrians, who had been waiting for such a victory for exactly 10 years. The “Wunder Team” won in all competitions and took the first three places in the hierarchy. In the end, Daniel Tschofenig (22) created a little surprise by winning on the very last jump, ahead of his teammates Jan Hörl and Stefan Kraft. The ranking of the top three in Bischofshofen ended up mirroring that of the Tour.
